Gallon

The gallon abbreviated “gal”, is a unit of measure for the capacity of liquids. The gallon was first used in England to measure wine and beer, where it had a specific capacity at the time. Both the U.S. system of measurement and the British imperial system of measurement include the gallon as a unit of measurement. Since both units of measure have different capacities, they differ from each other. Currently, there are three different types of gallons used in different parts of the world that differ from each other.

Liter

A liter was first described as the volume of 1 kilogram of water at standard pressure. The liter is useful for measuring the quantities of liquids and tiny solids such as grains and rice that conform to their containers. Although the liter is not recognized by the International System of Measure, it is permissible to use it in calculations along with the units of SI. For this reason, the liter may be used with the prefix SI.

How many liters in a gallon

1 gallon contains 3.785 liters.
2 gallons contain 7,570 liters.
3 gallons contain 11,350 liters.
4 gallons contain 15,140 liters.
5 gallons contain 18,920 liters.

Of course, these are not fixed numbers, but can change depending on the system of measurement used: There are two major systems of measurement: the metric system and the imperial system. First, note the table below and then read the rest of the article for a better understanding and more details.

Different types of gallons

Throughout the world, three types of gallons are used to measure the volume of liquids: Imperial Gallon, US Liquid Gallon, and US Dry Gallon. Each of these gallons is used in certain countries, some of which we will mention below. Depending on where you live, you should use the gallon that is recognized as the unit of measure in your country. For example, if you live in Canada, Australia, or England, you should use the Imperial Gallon, and if you live in America, the US Liquid Gallon.

Imperial gallon

1 Imperial gallon= 4 Imperial quarts = 4.546 liters = 277.42 cubic inches =10 pound water at 17 °C = 4.54 kg water at 17 °C

The imperial or UK gallon has a volume of 277.42 cubic inches or 4.54609 liters. At a temperature of 17 °C, this measure was equivalent to 10 pounds (4.54 kg) of water. The United Kingdom, Canada, the British Virgin Islands, some Caribbean countries, the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, and Montserrat are some countries that use imperial gallons. In imperial units of measure, four quarts equal one gallon. These quarts consist of two pints, and each pint is equal to 20 fluid imperial ounces.

US liquid gallon

1 U.S. liquid gallon = 4 US liquid quarts = 3.7854 liters = 231cubic inches =8.34 pound water at 17 °C = 3.78 kg water at 17 °C

3.7854 liters or 231 cubic inches is exactly equal to one U.S. liquid gallon. At a temperature of 17 °C, a U.S. Liquid Gallon weighs 8.34 pounds or 3.78 kilograms of water. It is 16.6% lighter than an imperial gallon. A U.S. Liquid Gallon is divided similarly to an Imperial Gallon (a gallon is divided into four quarts, each quart into two pints, and each pint into 16 U.S. fluid ounces). 128 U.S. fluid ounces are equal to one U.S. fluid gallon.

US Dry Gallon

1 US Dry Gallon = 4 US Dry Quarts = 148.947 fluid ounce=268.8025 cubic inches=4.405 liters

The U.S. Dry Gallon is equivalent to 268.8025 cubic inches or 4.405 liters or 8 Winchester Bushels. This unit is used in the U.S. but is less common compared to the other two gallons.

Gallon to Liter

To convert gallons to liters, multiply the gallon value by 3.785.
However, you also need to consider the type of gallon you’re using, as there are three different types (imperial gallon, dry gallon, and liquid gallon). Once you figure out what measurement of a gallon is needed, you can use the following formula to convert.

The formula for converting gallons to Liters is very simple and is done by a simple multiplication operation that multiplies the number of gallons by a fixed number that varies depending on the type of gallon: 3.785 for US liquid gallons, 4.546 for imperial gallons, and 4.405 for US Dry Gallon. To better understand these explanations, please see the formulas below. There you will also find some examples and tables to help you with the conversion.
(Imperial gallon) Volume in liters = (volume in gal) x (4.546L/gal)

(US liquid gallon) Volume in liters = (volume in gal) x (3.785 L/gal)

(US Dry Gallon) Volume in liters = (volume in gal) x (4.405 L/gal)

Liter to Gallon

To convert Liter to gallons, simply do the opposite of what you did before. Instead of multiplying the volume in gallons by a series of numbers, you need to divide the desired volume in Liter by the same numbers. So for the US Liquid Gallon, you need to divide the volume in Liter by 3.785, for the Imperial Gallon you need to divide the volume in Liter by 4.546, and for the US Dry Gallon, you need to divide the volume in Liter by 4.405 to get the volume in gallon units. Please refer to the following formulas and examples.

(US liquid gallon) Volume in gallon = (volume in Liter) ÷ (3.785)

(Imperial gallon) Volume in gallon = (volume in Liter) ÷ (4.546)

(US Dry Gallon) Volume in gallon = (volume in Liter) ÷ (4.405)

Liters to Gallons – Examples

Example 1: How many gallons are in 7.57 Liters? (US liquid gallons)

7.57 ÷ 3.785=2
Example 2: How many gallons are in 9.08 Liters? (Imperial gallons)

9.08 ÷ 4.546=2
Example 5: How many gallons are in 8.81 Liters? (US dry gallons)

8.81 ÷ 4.405=2

In which countries is the gallon still used as a unit of measurement?

After the gallon was removed from the list of legally required primary units of measurement in EU Directive 80/181/EEC on December 31, 1994, it can only be used as an additional or secondary unit of measurement. In 2010, the United Arab Emirates stopped selling gasoline in the gallon unit of measure, and Guyana soon followed. In 2014, Burma also switched from gallons to liters. On September 30, 1995, the United Kingdom switched from the traditional unit of measure, the gallon, to the unit of measure, the liter. Ireland also adopted the liter on December 31, 1993, in accordance with the EU Directive. In the Middle East, however, water bottles are still measured in gallons.
